The issues of our time, from climate change to terrorism, are not local. They affect people from every country, race, religion and political ideology. As a global affairs major, you’ll develop the knowledge and real-world skills to make an impact.
Whether you want to work in government, nonprofits or international organizations, this major gives you the tools to shape policy and create positive change on a global scale. You’ll also become a more well-rounded and informed citizen, with a deeper understanding of how different cultures can interact with each other in unexpected ways.
Courses and experiences in this program address many of the world’s pressing issues – such as peace-building, conflict resolution, sustainable development, famine, poverty, war, gender and racial equality, nuclear proliferation and international law. These issues are rooted in historical events, economics, social trends and politics.
You’ll learn to analyze the complex factors that influence global developments and how those factors can be addressed through a variety of strategies, including diplomacy, international law, regional cooperation and humanitarian efforts. You’ll gain a strong foundation in the social sciences, focusing on international relations, comparative studies and history.
Students interested in pursuing this major are encouraged to take introductory courses in economics, politics and history, as well as GLBL 2121, in their first year. Prospective students are also strongly advised to begin working toward their L4 language requirement early in the sophomore year. Students who wish to enroll in the major must consult with their advisor about the appropriate timeline for fulfilling the requirements and receiving DUS approval to register for a course.
